Political Tensions Rise After TMC's Meeting with Election Officials

The recent meeting between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Election Commission has escalated into a political controversy. The party alleges that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar told the delegation to 'leave' just minutes after the meeting commenced.

TMC MP Derek O'Brien stated that the meeting lasted only a few minutes. He mentioned that they met with the Chief Election Commissioner today, and within seven minutes of starting, they were told to 'leave.' The meeting began at 10:02 AM and concluded at 10:07 AM. O'Brien explained that the delegation raised concerns regarding the transfers of officials and expressed worries about the conduct of fair and free elections.

He noted that when they questioned the officials' transfers and how fair elections could be conducted under such circumstances, the Chief Election Commissioner responded by asking them to leave. O'Brien described the situation as extremely concerning, stating, 'What I witnessed today was shameful.' According to TMC, at the beginning of the meeting, the delegation brought up nine letters sent by party leader Mamata Banerjee, which had gone unanswered. They also raised issues regarding alleged collusion between Election Commission officials and BJP supporters in Nandigram.

O'Brien had previously mentioned that the meeting started with the discussion of the nine letters written by Mamata Banerjee, which received no response. He further stated that the delegation objected to the functioning of the Commission, asserting that if other election commissioners were not allowed to speak, they did not wish to listen to the Chief Election Commissioner. He remarked, 'We told Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar that we do not want to hear you because you are not allowing the other two commissioners to speak.'

TMC Challenges Election Commission to Release Meeting Proceedings

The TMC has challenged the Election Commission to make the proceedings of the meeting public. O'Brien stated, 'I challenge the Election Commissioner to release the video or audio of today's proceedings.' He also mentioned that a member of the delegation congratulated the Chief Election Commissioner for being the only Chief Election Commissioner in India facing expulsion notices in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
