TMC MPs to Support No-Confidence Motion Against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla

In a significant political move, All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) MPs are preparing to support a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, as directed by party leader Mamata Banerjee. This decision comes just before the budget session's second phase, starting March 9, where Congress MPs plan to challenge Birla's conduct. Accusations of bias and unfair treatment towards opposition members have surfaced, raising questions about the Speaker's impartiality. Both the ruling BJP and opposition Congress have issued directives for their MPs to attend the upcoming sessions, indicating a tense political atmosphere ahead.

TMC's Strategic Move Ahead of Budget Session

Members of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) are set to back a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, following directives from party leader Mamata Banerjee. This development comes just before the second phase of the budget session, which is scheduled to commence on March 9. During this session, three Congress MPs are expected to introduce a motion demanding the removal of Speaker Birla, aimed at preventing opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, from speaking.

Congress MPs Mohammad Javed, Kodikunnil Suresh, and Mallu Ravi have accused Speaker Birla of bias and of making "baseless allegations" against female opposition MPs. They further claimed that while opposition members have been suspended for raising public interest issues throughout the parliamentary session, members of the ruling party have not faced reprimands for making derogatory remarks about former prime ministers.

The Lok Sabha's agenda highlights concerns regarding the Speaker's conduct, which includes preventing opposition leaders from speaking, making unfounded accusations against female opposition MPs, and suspending opposition members for raising public issues. In contrast, ruling party members who made offensive comments about former prime ministers were not reprimanded. This behavior has led to a perception that the Speaker has lost the impartiality necessary to earn the trust of all sections of the House.

Additionally, Congress MPs have openly accused Birla of consistently siding with the ruling party on contentious issues, asserting that such conduct poses a threat to the smooth functioning of the Lok Sabha. Meanwhile, both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress have issued a 'three-line whip' to their Lok Sabha MPs, instructing them to be present in the House from March 9 to 11.
