Allegations of Police Misconduct in Nayagarh

Kolkata/Nayagarh: On Tuesday, Mahua Moitra, a Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), accused the police in Nayagarh, Odisha, of unlawfully expelling four migrant workers from West Bengal, despite their possession of valid identification. She labeled the actions as 'unconstitutional' and indicated her intention to pursue legal action.

In a post shared on X, Moitra highlighted her concerns to Nayagarh's Superintendent of Police, S Susree, asserting that the officer in charge of the Odagaon police station had ordered the four Bengali migrants, who are legitimate Indian citizens with proper documentation, to vacate the district.

Moitra claimed that the police pressured the landlord to evict the workers and threatened them with arrest, despite verification from the Murshidabad SP confirming their status. She emphasized that such actions are illegal and infringe upon constitutional rights, stating, 'I will take you to court, so prepare yourself.'

Previously, the Trinamool Congress had accused the Odisha Police of engaging in arbitrary detentions and harassing Bengali-speaking laborers, allegations that the state administration has denied.

As of now, the Nayagarh district police have not issued any response to Moitra's claims.
