TMC MP Claims Assault Amid Political Tensions in West Bengal
Incident of Assault on TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee
Kalyan Banerjee, a Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), reported that he sustained injuries to his head due to an attack by a crowd outside a police station in the Hooghly district of West Bengal on Sunday. He stated that he was there to submit a memorandum protesting the arrests of party workers following the assembly elections.
In response to this alleged incident, TMC leader Mamata Banerjee visited the MP's residence in Shrirampur, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of committing a 'murder of democracy.' Banerjee claimed that BJP supporters were responsible for the attack against him.
However, the ruling BJP dismissed these allegations, asserting that local residents across the state were expressing their anger against TMC leaders. This incident occurred just a day after local residents reportedly attacked TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee, who had visited the Sonarpur town in South 24 Parganas district to meet families affected by post-election violence.
Tensions escalated outside the Chanditala police station when a group of people displayed black flags and labeled Kalyan Banerjee and other TMC members as 'thieves.'
Banerjee alleged that he was injured during the protest and blamed BJP supporters for the incident. Speaking to reporters, he mentioned, 'This all happened in front of the police. I have a head injury and I am bleeding.' He accused the police of inaction and staged a sit-in protest, asserting that TMC would continue to oppose 'BJP-sponsored attacks.'
In light of the incident, a significant police and central force presence has been deployed in the area to prevent further violence. Following the event, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Kalyan Banerjee's home. The TMC shared a photo on social media showing Mamata Banerjee with the MP, who had a bandage on his forehead.
The party's post stated, 'Those who believe that violence and threats can silence us have learned nothing from history. Every attack strengthens our resolve to fight for truth and justice. The truth cannot be suppressed. We cannot be denied justice. We will not back down.'
In a separate post, Mamata Banerjee accused BJP supporters of targeting TMC leaders for two consecutive days. She remarked, 'Yesterday, BJP supporters brutally attacked senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee. Disturbing videos of these incidents are publicly available. Today, Kalyan Banerjee also fell victim to a planned attack by the BJP. The BJP is murdering democracy.'
