Arrest of TMC Leader
On Monday, the West Bengal police apprehended Jahangir Khan, a leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), in connection with an extortion case near the India-Nepal border. According to police reports, Khan had been evading arrest for several days but was located and taken into custody close to the international border. His arrest comes weeks after multiple charges were filed against him and several associates, including extortion, threats, assault, and election-related violence.
Re-voting Ordered in Falta Assembly Constituency
Due to numerous irregularities and complaints, the Election Commission mandated re-voting in the Falta assembly constituency just two days before the assembly election results were announced. The results for the 293 seats in Bengal were declared on May 4, but the central election body canceled voting in Falta, citing "serious electoral offenses and violations of democratic processes." Allegations of voter intimidation and tampering with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) surfaced at various polling stations in Falta, including instances of erasing names of opposition candidates. The lack of adequate CCTV footage made it impossible to verify the fairness of the voting process.
Khan's Attempt to Flee
Jahangir, who adopted the nickname 'Pushpa' to challenge police supervisor Ajay Pal Sharma, known as 'Singham', was reportedly arrested by the Bengal STF while attempting to flee to Nepal after weeks of evasion. Following a visit to Sharma's home before the elections, where he warned family members against intimidating voters on election day, Khan remarked, "If he is Singham, then I am Pushpa."
