TMC's Strategic Push in Bhawanipur

As the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections approach, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) is focusing its efforts on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's stronghold, Bhawanipur. During a significant organizational meeting held on Sunday at the Ahindra Manch in South Kolkata, TMC's national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee set ambitious targets for party workers. According to sources, in this closed-door meeting, the TMC leader cautioned party members against complacency and urged them to monitor the strongroom after voting concludes.

High-Stakes Contest: Didis vs. Shuvendu

All eyes will be on the Bhawanipur seat in the upcoming elections. The BJP has decided to field opposition leader Shuvendu Adhikari, making this contest particularly intriguing.

Key Objectives Outlined

During the meeting, Abhishek Banerjee emphasized the following goals:

Victory Margin: Mamata Banerjee must secure a win by at least 60,000 votes.

Booth Management: The party aims to triumph at a minimum of 232 out of 287 polling booths (up from 231 previously).

Kolkata's Pride: Bhawanipur should emerge as the top-performing constituency in Kolkata.

Understanding Bhawanipur's Dynamics

Voting in West Bengal will occur in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with counting scheduled for May 4. This organizational meeting is crucial as Bhawanipur has long been considered Mamata Banerjee's political bastion, and the upcoming elections are expected to witness a high-profile contest with the BJP's Shuvendu Adhikari challenging her.

According to TMC sources, Abhishek Banerjee addressed party workers at the Ahindra Manch, urging them to ensure Bhawanipur stands out as Kolkata's best-performing constituency. He stressed the need for Mamata Banerjee to win by over 60,000 votes and warned against complacency, despite the constituency being a TMC stronghold.

Strengthening Party Operations

The meeting, attended by local councilors, booth workers, and organizational leaders, was part of TMC's efforts to bolster its booth-level operations in Bhawanipur ahead of the assembly elections. Abhishek Banerjee called on party workers to surpass their previous performance, noting that during Mamata Banerjee's last election here, they won at 231 booths. This time, they must ensure victory at a minimum of 232 booths.

He urged booth presidents to act as vigilant guardians in their respective polling areas, emphasizing that internal disagreements within local committees should not hinder organizational efforts.

Call for Vigilance

Among those present were TMC state president Subrata Bakshi, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, South Kolkata district president Debashish Kumar, and local councilors. Mamata Banerjee, addressing party workers, stressed the importance of remaining cautious and vigilant even after voting ends, advising them not to leave but to keep an eye on the strongroom.

Recalling the dramatic events during the Nandigram vote counting in 2021, Banerjee alleged that a sudden power outage had altered the results. She reminded workers to stay alert, as power outages could occur, necessitating vigilance over the strongroom.

Mamata Banerjee also expressed concerns about recent administrative changes during the election process, accusing the central government of interfering in state affairs. She stated, 'In the last three days, 50 officials have been removed. If anything happens, Narendra Modi and the Election Commission will be responsible.'

Additionally, she mentioned the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list, assuring that the party would provide legal assistance to voters facing issues. 'A supplementary list will be published tomorrow. If anyone's name is removed or they encounter difficulties, we will offer legal support.'
