TMC Faces Major Setback as Senior MP Resigns Amid Internal Crisis
Significant Resignation in TMC
On Monday, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) experienced a significant blow when senior Rajya Sabha member Sukendu Shekhar Roy resigned from the upper house and left the party. This development comes at a time when the party is grappling with a major internal crisis following a rebellion among a large faction of its legislators in West Bengal. Roy's departure is viewed as a substantial setback for the party leadership, especially after he recently warned that the unrest in the assembly could extend to Parliament.
Context of the Resignation
This latest incident follows a decision by nearly 60 out of 80 TMC legislators in the West Bengal assembly to declare expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee as the opposition leader. This move has dealt a significant blow to the party and raised concerns about similar rebellions among MPs. Roy had publicly expressed such concerns, indicating that the events in the assembly could eventually be mirrored in Parliament.
Roy's Remarks Post-Resignation
After stepping down, Roy referenced the RG Car case and reiterated his stance on the issue. He stated that he had requested the police commissioner and the head of the RG Car case for interrogation in custody. He remains convinced that they played a central role in tampering with evidence. His relationship with the party became strained during the RG Car movement, yet he stood by the party leadership on key issues. He was alongside Mamata Banerjee when she approached the Supreme Court regarding the SIR case.
Roy's Political Journey
Sukendu Shekhar Roy first became a member of the Rajya Sabha in 2011. The TMC has nominated him to the upper house three consecutive times. Over the years, he has been one of the senior parliamentary faces of the party. During the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections, when Mamata Banerjee contested from Nandigram, Roy was also sent there. However, allegations arose that party leaders did not pay sufficient attention to his views.
