TMC Takes Disciplinary Action Against Senior Leaders

In the midst of internal strife within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal, the party has expelled eight senior members, including Firhad Hakim and Arup Biswas, on charges of anti-party activities. According to party insiders, this disciplinary measure was prompted by a growing leadership crisis and factionalism, as several leaders were reportedly acting against the party's official stance.

Both Hakim and Biswas have previously held significant administrative and organizational roles within the West Bengal government and TMC. Their expulsion marks a major shift within the party, occurring after weeks of political instability characterized by allegations of dissent, leadership disputes, and competing claims over organizational decisions.

Insiders suggest that the aim of this decision is to restore internal discipline and strengthen leadership control, which is seen as one of the most serious internal challenges faced by the party in recent years. Meanwhile, a rebel faction led by opposition leader Ritabrata Banerjee has elected MLA Arup Roy as its president, posing the most significant challenge to the authority of party founder Mamata Banerjee. This move indicates that the rebellion, which began in the assembly and extended to parliament, has now reached the organizational core of the party.

During a special session attended by rebel MLAs, councilors, and other leaders, Banerjee announced that Roy was unanimously elected as the party president. Former minister Arup Biswas and MLAs Firhad Hakim, Rathin Ghosh, and Sabina Yasmin were appointed as vice-presidents, while Ritabrata Banerjee, Javed Khan, and Sandipan Saha were designated as general secretaries. This new structure effectively removes Mamata Banerjee's nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, from the position of national general secretary. MLA Akhruzzaman Ansari from Raghunathganj has been appointed as the treasurer.
