TMC's Call for Unity with Congress
In light of ongoing speculations regarding a potential merger between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Congress party aimed at opposing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), MP Sougata Roy emphasized on June 11 the importance of collaborating with Congress. While he did not confirm any formal merger or alliance, he stated, "It is essential for us to work with Congress. That’s all I can say for now. We will see if a merger or alliance takes place."
Allegations Against BJP
Discussing the BJP, Roy accused the ruling party of perpetrating violence against TMC leaders and their offices. He urged for a united front with Congress to counter the BJP's influence in West Bengal. These remarks came amidst the resignations of TMC MPs from the Rajya Sabha. On the same day, TMC MP Prakash Chik Barik resigned from the upper house, stating he had considered the opinions of the people of West Bengal before making his decision.
Resignations Continue
This marked the third resignation within a week; earlier, TMC MPs Sushmita Dev and Sukendu Shekhar Roy had resigned on June 10 and June 8, respectively. Roy resigned from both the Rajya Sabha and his primary membership in TMC. When questioned about reports suggesting that some TMC MPs were interested in joining the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Barik responded, "Time will tell." He was later spotted at the residence of BJP Lok Sabha MP Nishikant Dubey.
Criticism of BJP's 'Operation Lotus'
On June 11, All India Trinamool Congress leader Kirti Azad criticized the BJP's alleged 'Operation Lotus.' He accused the BJP of enticing and threatening MPs with money, claiming that West Bengal police were present at the homes and offices of these MPs. In a social media post, Azad stated that 'Operation Lotus' was in full swing under Amit Shah's supervision, with several names surfacing through sources. He remarked that this strategy was failing, asserting, "I cannot predict the future, but they certainly do not have 16 names. Money has been offered, threats have been made, and now the West Bengal police are stationed at these MPs' homes and offices. Amit Shah, try a little harder. After all, the 'borrowed vermilion' you seek belongs to the one caught on camera accepting a bribe of five lakh rupees."
