Tipra Motha Party Threatens to Contest Elections Independently Over Accord Implementation
TMP Chief's Warning on Election Strategy
Agartala, Dec 21: Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the leader of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), has issued a stern warning that the party will consider running independently in the upcoming elections for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council if the Tiprasa Accord is not put into action.
Debbarma expressed his concerns during a press conference, stating, "What can I say when Chief Minister Manik Saha has already declared that the BJP will secure all 28 seats in the tribal council? If the Tiprasa Accord remains unimplemented, we will contest the elections alone, as I cannot mislead my community."
He asserted that while the central government seems open to executing the Accord, some local leaders appear to resist its implementation.
Additionally, Debbarma emphasized that the TMP will not waver on the issue of the Kokborok script, which is the native language of many tribal groups in Tripura.
He drew parallels to the historical imposition of Urdu in former East Pakistan, asserting that the choice of script for Kokborok is a matter for the Tiprasa people alone, free from external influence.
"Both the central and state governments must honor the feelings of the indigenous population regarding the Kokborok script selection. Our position is firm; this is an internal matter," he stated.
Regarding the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, Debbarma urged the central and state authorities to formulate a clear strategy for the Northeast, as extremist elements are active across the border.
"Indigenous tribes, particularly minorities, are facing oppression in Bangladesh. Radical groups pose a threat by potentially harboring anti-Indian elements. A nationalist party cannot afford to be passive in such a precarious situation," he remarked.
The TMP, which is allied with the BJP, had previously signed an agreement with the central and state governments in March 2024 aimed at the comprehensive development of indigenous communities.
In the 2021 TTADC elections, the TMP, a newly established regional party at the time, managed to defeat the BJP.
