Tipra Motha Party Leads in Tripura Tribal Council Elections

Agartala, Apr 17: The Tipra Motha Party (TMP) is currently leading in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections, having secured a lead in 22 out of 28 seats following the third round of counting.


The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is ahead in six seats, while other parties such as the CPI(M), Congress, and the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) have not gained any seats so far.


Despite being a significant ally in the BJP-led state government, the TMP and BJP chose to contest the tribal council elections independently.


"Counting commenced at 8 am across all 17 centers under strict security measures. The TMP is leading in 22 seats, while the BJP is ahead in six after the third round of counting," stated Bipul Barman, an official from the state election commission.


In the previous elections held in 2021, the TMP secured 18 seats, while the BJP won nine.


Approximately 83 percent of eligible voters participated in the TTAADC elections on April 12, which experienced minor incidents of violence. The TTAADC covers two-thirds of Tripura's geographical area and is home to around 1.3 million residents.


In the outgoing TTAADC, the TMP held 17 seats, the BJP had nine, and two seats were unoccupied.


More than 83.52 percent of the 9,62,697 eligible voters cast their votes on April 12, determining the fate of 173 candidates.


A State Election Commission official mentioned that prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, have been enforced around counting centers to maintain law and order.
