Tilak Varma Reflects on ODI Journey and Influences from Senior Players
Tilak Varma's Insights After India's ODI Victory
New Delhi, Dec 2: After a remarkable victory in Ranchi, Indian cricketer Tilak Varma shared his thoughts on participating in ODIs and Tests, attributing his development and mindset to the guidance of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Gautam Gambhir.
India faced a tough challenge but ultimately triumphed over South Africa by 17 runs in a thrilling first ODI, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series at the JSCA International Stadium Complex.
In an interview on JioStar’s ‘Follow The Blues,’ Varma expressed his preference for longer formats and the impact of experienced players: “I find ODI and Test cricket align well with my style as I enjoy the longer format. I’m eager to play more ODIs. The confidence level is significantly elevated when Rohit bhai and Virat bhai are on the same team. Their vast experience and knowledge are invaluable, and I strive to absorb as much advice from them as I can to improve. I often consult Virat bhai, particularly regarding fitness and running between the wickets. His intensity is remarkable, and I enjoy running as well; I consider myself quite fast, so I look forward to running between the wickets with him.”
India set a formidable first innings score, bolstered by a stellar century from Virat Kohli and crucial fifties from Rohit Sharma and K.L. Rahul, finishing with a total of 398/8 in 50 overs. They then restricted South Africa to 332, securing the match by 17 runs, with notable performances from Matthew Breetzke (72 runs off 80 balls), Marco Jansen (70 runs off 39 balls), and Corbin Bosch (67 runs off 51 balls) keeping the contest close.
Regarding the mentorship from head coach Gautam Gambhir, Varma remarked, “Gautam sir consistently boosts my confidence. He emphasizes that if you possess the skill, you can excel in all formats. He applies pressure during practice sessions to prepare me for match situations. His challenges stem from his belief in my potential, and that support is incredibly meaningful to me.”
Looking ahead, India aims to maintain their winning streak in the second ODI against South Africa in Raipur on Wednesday. Varma stated, “I want to capitalize on every opportunity against South Africa and finish those matches. I aim to establish myself in ODIs and Tests as well. I’m pushing myself to excel in the longer formats and develop as a player.”
