New Delhi: A distressing incident occurred off the coast of Oman, where three out of 24 Indian crew members aboard a commercial ship are currently unaccounted for following an attack. The Indian government has expressed strong condemnation of this assault.
In a statement, New Delhi emphasized the urgent need to cease attacks on commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the Middle East, advocating for the restoration of safe navigation through international waters.
The vessel, named Settebello, was targeted just two days after another ship, flagged by Palau and carrying 24 Indian nationals, faced an attack from the US Navy while attempting to bypass a blockade on Iranian ports.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed, "We condemn the attack on the commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman today. Out of the 24 Indian crew members, 21 have been rescued, while three remain missing."
The Indian embassy in Oman is actively monitoring the situation and is in close contact with local authorities to facilitate ongoing search and rescue efforts.
The MEA expressed concern over the persistent attacks on shipping in the region, attributing them to the ongoing conflicts. They reiterated the need for immediate de-escalation and a diplomatic resolution to restore peace and stability.
According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which monitors vessel movements in strategic waterways, the incident resulted in one casualty and two individuals reported missing.
Local reports indicate that a tanker has suffered a fire in its engine room.
The MEA reiterated, "The targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure must cease, and navigation and commerce through international waters should be restored in accordance with international law."
This incident occurs amidst escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, with Israel conducting airstrikes in response to missile attacks from Iran.
