Thousands of Farmers March to Bhopal Demanding MSP for Moong

Farmers Protest in Bhopal

On Tuesday, thousands of farmers from across Madhya Pradesh set out towards Chief Minister Mohan Yadav's residence in Bhopal. The situation escalated as a heavy police presence was deployed, leading to tensions when security personnel blocked the protesters near the CM's residence. Over 2,000 farmers, representing 19 different farmer organizations, participated in the march. Reports emerged of clashes between the demonstrators and police as they were prevented from advancing further.

The protesters, arriving in tractors and on foot, declared they would not retreat until their demands were met. They brought essential supplies for a week-long protest, focusing on their request for the government to purchase 100% of moong at the minimum support price (MSP). The farmers expressed their determination to continue the demonstration until the state government acknowledges their demands.

This protest reflects the growing discontent among farmers regarding procurement issues, with ongoing demonstrations in various regions of the state concerning moong purchases. Farmer groups had previously warned that if their demands were ignored, they would block highways and march towards the state assembly. As thousands of farmers advanced towards the CM's residence, police established a security perimeter about seven kilometers away at the Barkatullah Bridge.

To prevent the march, the Special Armed Force (SAF), Rapid Action Force (RAF), and teams from over 20 police stations were deployed. Reports indicated that several protesters broke through barricades before entering the state capital, prompting authorities to tighten security measures. Police set up buses on main roads, reinforced barricades, and deployed water cannons and riot control vehicles to stop the protesters from proceeding towards the CM's residence.

Senior police and administrative officials were present on-site to monitor the situation. They stated that additional security measures were implemented to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain law and order. The farmers' march caused traffic disruptions on major routes leading to Bhopal, with the highway connecting Obaidullaganj to Bhopal being closed, and traffic also affected on the route from Jabalpur to Sultanpur.
