The Birth of Draupadi

Draupadi, the daughter of King Drupada, was born unexpectedly. At her birth, a divine proclamation declared that she was destined to fulfill the will of the gods and to bring about the downfall of unruly warriors, instilling great fear in the Kauravas.

Being the daughter of Drupada, she was named Draupadi. Additionally, she is referred to as Yajnaseni, as it is believed she was born from the sacrificial fire. Her complexion was likened to the delicate and beautiful lotus, earning her the name Krishna.

Draupadi's Aspirations

Draupadi had a vision for her future husband, desiring him to possess fourteen admirable qualities: fame, wealth, beauty, patience, righteousness, bravery, wisdom, knowledge, strength, valor, royal virtues, devotion to the divine, truthfulness, and a glorious reputation.

To achieve this, she undertook severe penance to please Lord Shiva. Pleased with her devotion, Shiva appeared before her and invited her to request a boon.

The Boon from Shiva

Draupadi expressed her wish for a husband who embodied all fourteen qualities. However, Shiva informed her that it was impossible for one man to possess all these traits. Instead, he granted her the boon that she would find these qualities in different individuals, leading to her marriage with fourteen men.

Concerned about her honor, Draupadi questioned Shiva, fearing that marrying multiple men would tarnish her reputation. In response, Shiva assured her that she would retain her virginity each morning after bathing, thus preserving her dignity.

Draupadi's Marriage

Following Shiva's blessing, Draupadi married the five Pandavas, who collectively embodied the fourteen qualities she sought. Thus, her union with five husbands fulfilled her desire for the traits she valued.
