The Role of Vidur in the Mahabharata Conflict: A Closer Look
The Mahabharata War: A Clash of Ambitions
New Delhi. The epic battle of Mahabharata unfolded between the Pandavas and Kauravas during the Dvapara Yuga. Key figures like Bhishma and Guru Dronacharya were reluctantly drawn into the conflict due to the deceitful ambitions of Duryodhana.
This internal struggle weighed heavily on them, as they were compelled to fight against their beloved Pandavas. Numerous attempts were made to persuade Duryodhana to avoid war, but his jealousy towards the Pandavas prevented him from conceding even five villages. Was this war solely a result of Duryodhana and Dhritarashtra's ambitions? According to Bhishma, while Duryodhana's stubbornness played a significant role, Vidur's mistakes also contributed to the conflict.
Mahatma Vidur, an incarnation of Yama, is renowned for his wisdom. He repeatedly cautioned Dhritarashtra against making poor decisions. Whenever Dhritarashtra strayed, Vidur was quick to admonish him. However, Dhritarashtra ignored his counsel, leading to the downfall of the Kauravas. The incident in question relates to the Lakshagriha episode, where Duryodhana plotted to burn the Pandavas alive. A palace made of wax was constructed to ensure they would perish in the flames. Vidur, sensing Duryodhana's intentions, managed to save the Pandavas by alerting them in time.
Pandavas Were Prevented from Returning to Hastinapur
At the time of the Lakshagriha incident, Yudhishthira had been declared the crown prince of Hastinapur. To uncover the roots of this conspiracy, Vidur advised the Pandavas to remain in hiding for a while instead of returning to Hastinapur. This decision ultimately became a pivotal factor in the Mahabharata's narrative. Based on false reports of the Pandavas' demise in the Lakshagriha incident, Duryodhana was proclaimed the new crown prince of Hastinapur. When the Pandavas eventually returned, a significant question arose: would Duryodhana retain his title, or would Yudhishthira reclaim it? Consequently, the decision was made to partition the kingdom and grant the Pandavas Indraprastha.
Why Did Bhishma Blame Vidur for This?
Just before the Mahabharata war, Bhishma was filled with sorrow at the thought of fighting against his beloved Pandavas. According to B.R. Chopra's Mahabharata, Vidur approached Bhishma during this time, suggesting he break his vow and refrain from participating in the battle against the Pandavas. At this moment, Bhishma expressed his frustration towards Vidur. He stated that had Vidur informed him about the Lakshagriha incident in a timely manner, he could have compelled Dhritarashtra to punish Duryodhana for plotting Yudhishthira's murder. This would have prevented the dilemma of having two crown princes at the same time.
