The Role of AI in Education and Media: Insights from a Recent Conference

Experts discussed the evolving landscape of journalism, the potential of India as an AI powerhouse, and the importance of training future media professionals in AI technologies. With insights from notable speakers and practical workshops, the event emphasized the need for continuous adaptation in academic curricula to keep pace with technological advancements. This gathering not only showcased the integration of AI in various sectors but also aimed to prepare students for the future job market shaped by these innovations.
 

Significance of Knowledge in the Age of AI

In Bhopal, the importance of knowledge was emphasized as paramount. AI cannot replace human consciousness and intellect. While technologies evolve, knowledge remains constant. Today, machines operate on technologies like AI, and the media plays a crucial role in educating the public about these advancements. This was highlighted by Professor Ashutosh Kumar Singh, Director of IIIT, during the concluding session of the AI Faculty Development Program at MCU. He noted that learning AI will create numerous opportunities for individuals, urging that there is no need for fear regarding job displacement, as AI can lead to new avenues.


Transformations in Media and Education

Vijay Manohar Tiwari, the Vice-Chancellor of MCU, remarked on the rapid changes occurring in media newsrooms. The tools and technologies currently in use are evolving at a pace of less than a week, primarily driven by AI. To prepare students for this shift, AI has been integrated into the journalism curriculum. This Faculty Development Program marks a significant step, with faculty members undergoing ten days of training, which will ultimately benefit students. Tiwari assured that the university will continuously update its syllabus and training in line with advancements in AI.


India's Potential as an AI Powerhouse

During the event, technology and language technology expert Balendu Sharma Dadhich stated that India has the potential to become a global AI powerhouse, supported by government initiatives. He emphasized the need to advance alongside AI, noting that top tech companies are investing in India. With a strong democratic dividend and a culture of inclusivity, India is viewed positively on the global stage. Dadhich elaborated on the development of AI in the US, China, and India, highlighting that 20% of the world's data is generated in India, which boasts a vast talent pool and rapidly developing digital infrastructure, creating ample opportunities for AI growth.


Practical Training in AI for Media Professionals

In a technical session, senior journalist and AI trainer Devika Chhibber conducted practical workshops on designing professional websites using Google Antigravity and Arbiter tools, as well as identifying deepfakes. She pointed out that AI is increasingly integrated into the newsroom ecosystem, making it essential for aspiring media professionals to receive training in AI and agentic AI. Additionally, she discussed fact-checking platforms, AI policy, and governance in detail.


Book Launch and Program Highlights

During the program, guests launched a book titled 'Janmadhyam Yuva aur Media Saksharta,' authored by Dr. Pradeep Daheriya, an assistant professor in the university's communication department. Professor C.P. Agarwal presented a comprehensive report on the various sessions of the ten-day FDP. The session was coordinated by Dr. Pavitri Srivastava, head of the Advertising and Public Relations Department. Dr. P. Shashikala, the university's registrar, expressed gratitude to the guests and experts present at the event.
