The Journey of Yogi Adityanath: From Village Roots to Political Leadership

Yogi Adityanath's journey from a small village in Uttarakhand to becoming the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh is a tale of dedication and influence. Born as Ajay Mohan Bisht, he was deeply involved in student politics from a young age. His encounter with Mahant Avaidyanath changed his life, leading him to renounce his family ties and embrace a spiritual and political path. After becoming Avaidyanath's successor, Yogi entered politics and quickly rose to prominence, representing Gorakhpur in Parliament multiple times. His story reflects the intertwining of spirituality and politics in modern India.

Early Life and Education

Yogi Adityanath, born on June 5, 1972, in a small village in Uttarakhand, was originally named Ajay Mohan Bisht. From his school days, he was actively involved with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, showing a strong inclination towards Hindutva.

He participated in every event organized by the student council. After completing his schooling, he earned a B.Sc. in Mathematics from Garhwal University, where he was consistently engaged in social and political activities. At just 22, he renounced his family life and settled in Gorakhpur.

Influence of Mahant Avaidyanath

During his school years, Yogi Adityanath frequently participated in debate competitions, where Mahant Avaidyanath, the then head of Gorakhnath Peeth, was often invited as a chief guest. After being impressed by Yogi's speech at one such event, Avaidyanath invited him for a conversation, leading to an invitation for Yogi to visit Gorakhpur.

Interestingly, both Avaidyanath and Yogi hailed from Uttarakhand, with their villages located just 10 kilometers apart. Following Avaidyanath's invitation, Yogi visited Gorakhpur but returned to his village after a short stay. He later enrolled in Lalit Mohan Sharma College in Rishikesh for further studies, although his heart was set on Gorakhpur.

Becoming Avaidyanath's Successor

When Mahant Avaidyanath fell ill, Yogi rushed back to Gorakhpur. Upon arrival, he found Avaidyanath in poor health. The Mahant expressed his concerns about the ongoing struggle to build a temple at the Ram Janmabhoomi site in Ayodhya, fearing that no one would carry on the mission if anything happened to him.

Moved by Avaidyanath's words, Yogi assured him that he would return soon. Shortly after, he left home under the pretense of a job and dedicated himself to Avaidyanath, who subsequently named him as his successor, solidifying Yogi's commitment to Gorakhpur.

Entry into Politics

In 1998, Mahant Avaidyanath retired from politics and appointed Yogi Adityanath as his successor, marking the beginning of Yogi's political career. He is the head of the renowned Gorakhnath Temple, previously led by Avaidyanath, who had chosen Yogi as his heir.

In the same year, Yogi contested the 12th Lok Sabha elections from Gorakhpur and won, becoming the youngest MP at just 26 years old. Since then, he has represented Gorakhpur in Parliament five times. However, upon being appointed as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 2016, he resigned from his parliamentary position. Yogi Adityanath is a prominent figure in the BJP and a significant leader in North Indian politics.
