The Journey of Yogi Adityanath: From Village Roots to Political Leadership

Yogi Adityanath, originally named Ajay Mohan Bisht, was born in a small Uttarakhand village. His early involvement in student politics and his mentorship under Mahant Avaidyanath shaped his path. After renouncing family life at 22, he became a significant political figure, winning multiple elections and eventually serving as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. This article delves into his inspiring journey, highlighting key moments that defined his career and influence in Indian politics.

Early Life and Education

Yogi Adityanath, born Ajay Mohan Bisht on June 5, 1972, in a small village in Uttarakhand, was actively involved with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad during his school years, showing an early affinity for Hindutva.

He participated in every event organized by the student council. After completing his schooling, he earned a B.Sc. in Mathematics from Garhwal University, where he engaged in various social and political activities. At just 22, he renounced his family life and moved to Gorakhpur.

Influence of Mahant Avaidyanath

During his school days, Yogi Adityanath frequently participated in debate competitions, where Mahant Avaidyanath, the then head of Gorakhnath Peeth, was often invited as a chief guest. After being impressed by Yogi's speech at one such event, Avaidyanath invited him for a conversation, leading to an invitation for Yogi to visit Gorakhpur.

Interestingly, both hail from Uttarakhand, with their villages located just 10 kilometers apart. After visiting Gorakhpur, Yogi returned home but later enrolled in Lalit Mohan Sharma College in Rishikesh for further studies, though his heart was set on Gorakhpur.

Becoming Avaidyanath's Successor

When Mahant Avaidyanath fell ill, Yogi rushed back to Gorakhpur. Upon arrival, he found Mahant in poor health. The Mahant expressed his concerns about the ongoing struggle to build a temple at the Ram Janmabhoomi site in Ayodhya, fearing that no one would continue the fight if he were to pass away.

Moved by his mentor's words, Yogi assured him that he would return soon. Shortly after, he left home under the pretext of a job and stayed with Mahant Avaidyanath, who eventually named him as his successor, solidifying Yogi's commitment to Gorakhpur.

Entry into Politics

In 1998, Mahant Avaidyanath retired from politics and named Yogi Adityanath as his successor, marking the beginning of Yogi's political career. He became the head of the renowned Gorakhnath Temple, previously led by Avaidyanath. That same year, Yogi contested the 12th Lok Sabha elections from Gorakhpur and won, becoming the youngest MP at just 26 years old.

Since then, he has represented Gorakhpur in the Lok Sabha five times. However, upon being appointed Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 2016, he resigned from his parliamentary position. Yogi Adityanath is now a prominent figure in the BJP and a significant leader in North Indian politics.
