The Beginning of a Nightmare

The story dates back to 2010 when a 21-year-old MBA student, Neha Ahlawat, left her home in Sector 38 West on July 30 around 6 PM to attend an English speaking class. Tragically, she never returned. That same night, amidst heavy rainfall, her partially clothed and bloodied body was discovered in the bushes near a taxi stand. Signs of violence were evident, and it was later confirmed through forensic analysis that she had been raped. Initially, the investigation yielded no leads, and by 2020, the case was deemed unsolved and closed. However, the DNA evidence would eventually lead the police to the truth fifteen years later.

A Disturbing Pattern Emerges

During this period, two more similar cases occurred in the forested areas of Chandigarh. In each instance, the women were targeted when they were alone, with the assailant taking advantage of the rainy weather. The perpetrator would lure them to secluded spots, attack them, strangle them, and then dispose of their bodies in the bushes. In several cases, evidence of rape was also found post-mortem. DNA analysis from all three cases pointed to a single individual.

Identifying the Killer Through DNA

Monu's pattern of crime involved not just one, but four women, all attacked in a similar manner. His first known crime occurred in 2008 when, at just 20 years old, he raped a young girl in the Chamba region of Himachal Pradesh, killing her with a sharp stone. Although he was arrested, a lack of solid evidence led to his acquittal during the trial. Shortly after, in 2010, he committed another rape and murder of an MBA student, using the same method. In 2022, he attacked a married woman in the Maloya forest, and in February 2024, he attempted to rape a 65-year-old woman, whose clothing contained DNA that matched his.

Capture and Conviction

Doctors conducted DNA tests comparing Monu Kumar's samples with those of the deceased married woman. On May 6, 2024, when Monu returned, police apprehended him. Initially, he denied all allegations, but when confronted with the matching DNA evidence from all three cases, he confessed to the murders. His mobile phone's location tracking revealed he was in the vicinity of where the body of the woman was found.

Sentencing of Monu

In a fast-track court ruling, notorious serial killer Monu was sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of the MBA student. Additionally, he was fined 50,000 rupees under various charges. Monu faces multiple accusations of similar crimes, with other cases still pending in court.
