Tezpur University VC Investigation Report Submitted to Assam Governor

The Centre has confirmed that the fact-finding committee, set up by Assam's Governor to investigate allegations against Tezpur University's vice chancellor, has submitted its report. Guwahati, Dec 2: On Monday, the Centre announced that the fact-finding committee, established by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, has delivered its findings regarding the allegations against Tezpur University's vice chancellor, Shambhu Nath Singh, to the Governor, who also serves as the institution's chancellor.


This information was provided by Union Minister of State for Education, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, during a parliamentary session when questioned about the receipt of the committee's report concerning serious claims about the vice chancellor's conduct.


In response to a question posed by Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi in the Lok Sabha, Majumdar clarified that Central universities operate as autonomous entities, established under specific Acts of Parliament and governed by their respective statutes and ordinances.


Majumdar elaborated on the procedures outlined in the Tezpur University Act of 1993, stating that if the vice chancellor's position is vacant, the pro vice chancellor will assume the responsibilities of the VC. If the pro VC is unavailable, the senior-most professor will take on these duties until a new VC is appointed or the current VC resumes their role, addressing the situation since September 22.


The inquiry committee, chaired by Prof. Devendra Jalihal, director of IIT Guwahati, included members Jiten Hazarika and Narayan Konwar. The committee, formed in October, investigated allegations of corruption, administrative issues, insufficient purchases of Assamese literature, and the management of a public tribute for Zubeen Garg, gathering testimonies from various stakeholders.
