Tezpur, June 6: The second edition of the Tezpur Litchi Festival commenced on Saturday, uniting farmers, buyers, entrepreneurs, and agricultural specialists to highlight the region's esteemed fruit and discover new market avenues.

Taking place at the District Library Auditorium in Tezpur, this two-day event aims to enhance market access for litchi producers while recognizing innovative farmers and agri-entrepreneurs.

According to Anand Kumar Das, the District Commissioner of Sonitpur and president of the organizing committee, “We are set to export approximately one tonne of litchi to Dubai, with another shipment heading to Singapore tomorrow. Additionally, we will send around 100 packets to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and we dispatched litchis to the Chief Minister yesterday. We aspire for Tezpur to gain international recognition through this festival.”

Over 50 exhibitors, around 30 farmers and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), along with at least 20 domestic and international buyers are participating in this event, which includes exhibitions, technical discussions, and interactions between buyers and sellers.

The festival's opening session began at 10 am, featuring floral tributes to Padmanath Gohain Baruah, who played a pivotal role in introducing enhanced litchi varieties in Tezpur, followed by a ceremonial lamp lighting.

Several notable figures, including Sonitpur MP Ranjit Dutta and MLA Ashok Singhal, were present at the event.

Dutta emphasized the significance of value addition in horticulture, stating, “I have observed products like freeze-dried pineapple and litchi chips being made. An increase in litchi and pineapple production will foster the growth of such industries, creating fresh opportunities for farmers and entrepreneurs.”

The festival will proceed on June 7 with a dedicated session on ‘Food Technology and Litchi’, followed by a workshop focusing on litchi cultivation and the advantages of Geographical Indication (GI) tagging.

The second day will also include guided tours of litchi orchards, culinary demonstrations, and tasting sessions of litchi-based products, culminating in a valedictory function and prize distribution ceremony in the evening.
