Srinagar, July 22: A head constable assigned to security duties for the Amarnath Yatra was fatally shot by a lone terrorist in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, prompting a significant anti-terror operation throughout south Kashmir and the arrest of numerous suspected overground workers (OGWs).

The incident occurred around 12:30 PM at Lal Chowk, according to officials. Head Constable Ashiq Hussain from the IRP 3rd Battalion suffered severe gunshot wounds and was immediately taken to the Government Medical College Hospital in Anantnag, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy group associated with the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the attack via a social media announcement.

Following the shooting, security forces cordoned off the area and initiated a search operation to locate the assailant. The Director General of Police, Nalin Prabhat, visited the site to evaluate the situation.

This incident triggered a coordinated anti-terror operation across the districts of Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, and Kulgam.

Authorities reported that several suspected OGWs connected to terrorist networks were detained for interrogation as part of the crackdown.

In Pulwama, police established mobile checkpoints at various locations to hinder the movement of suspected militants and anti-national elements.

Additional Superintendent of Police Shafat Najar oversaw intensified frisking and search operations.

Shopian police also conducted thorough security checks and counter-terror operations throughout the district to avert any attempts to disrupt peace.

Similar operations were executed in Anantnag and neighboring Kulgam, with senior police officials supervising the efforts in their respective areas.

Officials indicated that security forces are on high alert across the Kashmir Valley to thwart any further attempts by terrorists to disrupt law and order.

This attack marks the first fatal incident involving Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel this year, drawing strong condemnation from political figures.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha labeled the killing as a "cowardly" and "heinous" act, asserting that those responsible will face justice.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also condemned the attack, honoring Hussain's sacrifice in service and extending condolences to his family.

The incident occurs amidst heightened security measures for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, one of the largest annual pilgrimages in the country, which is under a comprehensive multi-layered security arrangement throughout Jammu and Kashmir.
