Tensions Rise in the Strait of Hormuz: Indian Seafarers Affected by Iranian Actions
Indian Seafarers Caught in Maritime Tensions
In a recent escalation in maritime tensions, at least one Indian seafarer is reported to be among the crew of a ship detained by Iranian forces in the Strait of Hormuz. According to Mukesh Mangal, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, two out of three foreign-flagged vessels targeted by Iranian military on Wednesday had a total of 22 Indian crew members.
Mangal reassured that all seafarers aboard these vessels are unharmed. Notably, the third ship involved in the incident did not have any Indian nationals on board.
Iran's actions included the capture of two foreign container ships attempting to navigate out of the strait, alongside firing upon a third vessel, as a response to the U.S. naval blockade affecting Iranian shipping.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) took control of the ships Francesca and Epaminondas. While Francesca had no Indian crew, one Indian national was confirmed to be part of the 21-member crew on Epaminondas.
The third vessel, Euphoria, flagged in Panama, is carrying 21 Indian seafarers, all of whom are reported safe.
Epaminondas, which was en route to India, has a crew primarily consisting of Ukrainians and Filipinos, with one Indian seafarer among them. Mangal confirmed that the Indian crew member is safe and has been in contact with relevant authorities.
The positioning of the vessels indicates their status, with those on the western side of the strait under Iranian control, while those on the eastern side have moved away from the conflict zone.
Iran has claimed that the detained vessels violated transit regulations or disregarded warnings, although maritime sources suggest that at least one ship had received prior clearance.
A British maritime security firm noted that the vessel targeted in the Strait of Hormuz was operating under a Liberian flag and had been informed of its authorization to transit the area. However, Iranian media reported that the ship ignored warnings from their forces before the incident.
This incident follows the U.S. seizure of an Iranian commercial vessel in the Sea of Oman, with the IRGC accusing the U.S. of breaching ceasefire agreements and engaging in what they termed 'armed piracy'.
