Condemning the incident, the Konsakhul Village Authority described the attack as “barbaric and inhumane”

Imphal, May 31: A new wave of tension has emerged in the Konsakhul region of Manipur after a villager was critically injured in what is being described as an ambush by armed members of the Kuki National Front (P) [KNF(P)] and residents from Leilon Vaiphei village.

Reports from the Konsakhul Village Authority indicate that one individual was injured, while another is currently unaccounted for following the attack.

According to a statement released on Sunday, the Village Authority claimed that the ambush took place around 10:30 am, coinciding with the deliberate cutting of the water supply line to Konsakhul Naga Village, which is essential for the daily needs of the community.

“As villagers attempted to restore the disrupted water supply, they were brutally ambushed without any provocation,” the statement detailed.

The Konsakhul Village Authority condemned the attack, labeling it “barbaric and inhumane,” and expressed that it has fostered an environment of fear and insecurity among the local populace.

“The assault on innocent civilians on a Sunday, a day of worship for Christians, is not only reprehensible but also a serious infringement of human rights and Christian values,” the statement emphasized.

Furthermore, the authority noted that this incident has intensified the distress already felt by the community, which has been grappling with the alleged kidnapping of 18 Naga civilians by KNF(P) militants and individuals from Leilon Vaiphei village.

While it has been reported that 12 of the abducted civilians have been freed, the fate of the remaining six remains uncertain.

Highlighting the ongoing insecurity, the authority called on the government and security forces to take swift and effective measures to safeguard residents, restore essential services, conduct a comprehensive investigation, and ensure justice for the victims.

Additionally, the Village Authority urged civil society organizations, human rights advocates, and other relevant entities to pay attention to the situation and assist in protecting the lives, rights, and dignity of the Konsakhul community.

Konsakhul Naga Village, situated in the Kangpokpi district near the foothills bordering Imphal West district, has seen escalating tensions in recent weeks due to reports of abductions, security issues, and local conflicts impacting the community.
