Tensions Rise in Kolkata Ahead of West Bengal Assembly Election Counting

As the counting of votes for the West Bengal Assembly elections approaches, tensions in Kolkata are escalating. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has raised concerns about potential discrepancies in the EVMs, prompting a visit to the storage site. The BJP has dismissed these claims as unfounded, while the Election Commission assures that all procedures are secure. With accusations flying and a heavy police presence, the atmosphere is charged as both parties prepare for the upcoming vote counting on May 4. Will the electoral process remain fair amidst these controversies?

Political Climate Heats Up in Kolkata

As the counting of votes for the West Bengal Assembly elections approaches, the political atmosphere in Kolkata has become increasingly tense. Allegations and counter-allegations regarding the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) have intensified between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On Thursday night, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee unexpectedly visited the Shakhawat Memorial Girls' High School to assess the situation, where the EVMs for the Bhawanipur constituency are stored. She remained there until late at night, claiming to have received reports of discrepancies in the EVMs from various locations, prompting her to investigate personally.

Chief Minister's Visit Sparks Controversy

The Chief Minister stated that initially, central forces prevented her from entering the premises, but according to election regulations, candidates and election agents are permitted access to sealed rooms. After obtaining permission from the relevant authorities, she entered, causing a stir in political circles.

BJP Dismisses TMC's Claims

In response, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari dismissed the Chief Minister's allegations as baseless, suggesting that her doubts about the EVMs reflect her fear of potential defeat. He noted that such accusations have become a part of TMC's strategy before every election.

Election Commission Responds to Allegations

Amidst these developments, the Election Commission and local administration have attempted to clarify the situation. Manoj Agarwal, the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal, stated that there is no possibility of any irregularities at the counting centers, as all strong rooms are under 24-hour CCTV surveillance, accessible for external viewing. He emphasized that allegations made without solid evidence are unfounded. Additionally, the Calcutta High Court dismissed a petition against the appointment of central personnel for the counting process, affirming that it falls within the jurisdiction of the Election Commission and is not illegal.

Bhawanipur Constituency Under Scrutiny

The Bhawanipur constituency, where the Chief Minister and the opposition leader are contesting, has garnered significant attention. Tensions escalated on Thursday when BJP workers intercepted a TMC vehicle, alleging it was carrying suspicious materials that could be used to tamper with the EVMs.

Allegations of Tampering Surface

Some party workers openly accused the TMC of attempting to replace EVMs with fake ones. A heavy police presence was deployed to maintain order during this incident.

Chief Minister Vows to Prevent Tampering

In light of these accusations, the Chief Minister asserted that her party would thwart any attempts to tamper with the EVMs. She also accused the Election Commission of bias, claiming that her party agents have been arrested and that there have been unilateral actions in several areas.

Minister Questions Election Commission's Procedures

State Minister Shashi Panja raised serious concerns regarding the Election Commission's operations, alleging that no political party was informed in advance about activities related to the strong rooms. She claimed that a room was opened without the presence of a representative from any party, which violates regulations. Panja also mentioned that activities of certain individuals were visible on cameras, despite the room being supposed to be sealed, and that pink envelopes containing postal ballots were observed, deepening suspicions.

Security Heightened Ahead of Counting

Outside the Netaji Indoor Stadium, where EVMs and VVPAT machines are stored before counting, security measures have been intensified. This entire situation has further heated the electoral atmosphere. While the TMC questions the integrity of the electoral process, the BJP labels these allegations as a political drama. With the counting scheduled for May 4, the atmosphere of distrust between the two parties poses a challenge for the administration and the Election Commission. All eyes are now on whether the counting will proceed peacefully and fairly.
