Tensions Rise in Kashmir Following Death of Iranian Leader Khamenei
Escalating Tensions in Kashmir
Following the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei due to a joint attack by the United States and Israel, tensions in the Kashmir Valley have reached a peak. For the second consecutive day on Tuesday, strict restrictions were enforced across the region. This marks the first instance of such large-scale protests in Kashmir since August 2019.
Security Measures Implemented
As a precaution, educational institutions were closed for two days starting Monday (March 2, 2026), and mobile internet speeds were reduced. However, on Tuesday (March 3, 2026), authorities canceled all movements of security forces in the valley due to escalating violence in some areas. To avoid further tensions, no road opening parties for security forces were deployed on that day.
Protests and Injuries Reported
In the protests that erupted in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday (March 2, 2026), at least 14 individuals were injured, including six security personnel. Reports indicated that around 75 rallies took place in various locations across the Kashmir Valley, with some demonstrations also occurring in the Jammu region.
Call for Calm from Authorities
This is the first time since August 2019 that Kashmir has witnessed such extensive protests. The administration in the Kashmir division has urged residents to exercise restraint and adhere to the advisories issued by authorities. A spokesperson stated, "The divisional administration acknowledges the role of all communities in maintaining peace and order in the valley. Citizens are advised to remain calm, follow local administration advisories, and share only verified information on digital platforms."
Support and Safety Measures
A 24-hour helpline (0194-2740003) has been established for those in need of assistance. The police have also appealed to the public to avoid violence and provocation, stating, "We urge all sections of society to exercise restraint and avoid violence and provocation." They emphasized that strict legal action would be taken against those inciting violence or engaging in illegal activities.
Additional Restrictions Imposed
On Monday (March 2, 2026), authorities imposed restrictions to prevent public movement, closed educational institutions, and reduced mobile internet speeds as a precautionary measure. They also sealed the clock tower at Lal Chowk and erected barricades around it, deploying a significant number of police and paramilitary CRPF personnel throughout the city to prevent gatherings.
Background of the Incident
Concertina wire and barricades were placed at essential intersections in the city, which were described as precautionary measures to maintain law and order. Khamenei was killed in a joint airstrike by the United States and Israel on Saturday (February 28, 2026).
