Amaravati, Aug 19: A leader from the YSR Congress Party has accused the ruling coalition led by the TDP in Andhra Pradesh of stifling opposition voices following the arrest of former MP Margani Bharat in Rajahmundry on Wednesday during a party event.
This incident heightened tensions in the region and prompted significant backlash from the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).
As reported by YSRCP, Bharat, accompanied by former MP Subhash Chandra Bose, was present at the 36th Division to participate in a program welcoming local TDP activists into the YSRCP.
However, a heavy police presence halted Bharat and other YSRCP leaders from continuing with their plans, resulting in a chaotic scene as party members questioned the police's involvement in what they deemed a peaceful political gathering.
Subsequently, police detained Margani Bharat and transported him to a nearby police station.
The opposition party condemned the arrest, asserting that it exemplifies the TDP-led government's misuse of law enforcement to hinder political opposition.
"This incident highlights the ongoing oppression under the TDP coalition, where police are weaponized against political adversaries. Rather than facilitating democratic engagement, the government resorts to intimidation tactics against YSRCP leaders to prevent them from connecting with the electorate," stated the YSRCP in an official release.
They further addressed Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, asserting that he cannot suppress opposition through police force.
In a related development, former Chief Minister and YSRCP President Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy convened a meeting with local elected officials, party leaders, and key members from the Rajahmundry Rural Assembly constituency at the party's central office in Tadepalli on Wednesday.
During this meeting, Jagan Mohan Reddy reviewed the party's standing in the constituency, discussed organizational issues, public grievances, strategies to bolster the party, and outlined future initiatives.
