Escalating Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz

Tehran: The fragile ceasefire between Iran and the United States is at risk of collapse. Following gunfire near the Strait of Hormuz, tensions have reached a boiling point. Iran has issued a stern warning that any further attacks from the U.S. will be met with a strong retaliatory response. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has threatened to target U.S. vessels as well as military bases in the region.

In a statement released on Saturday, the IRGC warned that an attack on Iranian tankers by the U.S. would clearly violate the ceasefire. Should the U.S. Navy take such an action again, Iranian missiles are fully prepared to strike American assets and vessels in the region. This warning follows an attack on two Iranian tankers in the Gulf of Oman.

The rising tensions between Iran and the U.S. come at a time when both nations are attempting to negotiate a resolution. The U.S. is currently awaiting Iran's response to its proposals aimed at extending the existing ceasefire and initiating broader discussions to resolve the conflict.

On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed hope for a response from Iran, although no official reply has been made public yet. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that U.S. military actions in the Persian Gulf raise doubts about their intentions.

On Friday, a U.S. fighter jet reportedly targeted two tankers flying the Iranian flag. The U.S. Navy accused these tankers of violating its blockade on Iranian ports. Iranian officials claimed that their navy retaliated against these attacks.

This confrontation between Iran and the U.S. is occurring near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping route that Iran controls, while the U.S. Navy maintains a blockade around Iranian ports, contributing to the heightened tensions.

The conflict between Iran and the U.S. escalated on February 28, when the U.S. and Israel conducted airstrikes in Tehran. Iran responded with counterattacks, leading to significant destruction. A temporary ceasefire was established on April 8, but subsequent attempts at negotiation have failed.
