Tensions Rise Between India and Bangladesh Over Diplomatic Dispute
Diplomatic Strain Between India and Bangladesh
Recently, the relationship between India and Bangladesh had shown signs of improvement, with both nations expressing a willingness to collaborate. In light of this, the Indian government appointed a trusted individual as the High Commissioner to Bangladesh. However, ongoing issues seem to be causing friction between the two countries. Reports indicate that Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry summoned India's acting High Commissioner, Pawan Badhe, to formally register their objections regarding certain matters.
The objections stem from comments made by Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, which Bangladesh found objectionable. Ishrat Jahan, the Director General for South Asia at the Foreign Ministry, clarified Bangladesh's stance to the Indian diplomat. According to an official from a news service, Bangladesh has officially expressed its concerns to India. It was reported that Chief Minister Sarma posted on social media last week about the detention of 20 foreign nationals in Assam, claiming they were illegal Bangladeshi immigrants who were subsequently pushed back.
Ishrat Jahan emphasized to the Indian representative that such remarks undermine the spirit of friendship between the two nations. Sources indicate that the Bangladeshi authorities deemed Sarma's comments disrespectful to India-Bangladesh relations and expressed their displeasure. Bangladesh has urged India to exercise caution and sensitivity when discussing bilateral issues.
The matter of illegal immigration has historically been a contentious topic between India and Bangladesh. With a new government in Bangladesh, there is a desire to handle the issue of immigration discreetly rather than publicly. This is why Bangladesh raised its objections when the Assam Chief Minister brought the topic to light. Overall, following Sheikh Hasina's political upheaval, Yunus has played a significant role in deteriorating relations with India, bringing the ties between the two countries to a minimal level.
