Tensions Rise as India Protests Iranian Actions in Strait of Hormuz

Tensions escalate as India summons Iranian ambassador Mohammad Fathali following an incident in the Strait of Hormuz where two Indian vessels were forced to change course due to gunfire from Iran's Revolutionary Guards. The Indian government has lodged a formal protest, emphasizing its commitment to safe maritime transit. India's Diplomatic Response to Iranian Provocation

New Delhi: Following an incident involving gunfire from Iran's Revolutionary Guards, India has summoned Iranian ambassador Mohammad Fathali. This action came after two Indian vessels were forced to change their course in the Strait of Hormuz, according to reliable sources.

The Indian government lodged a formal protest with the Iranian envoy regarding the incident.

While there has been no official confirmation about Fathali's summons to the Ministry of External Affairs, multiple commercial ships attempted to navigate the Strait after Iran announced its reopening for commercial traffic on Friday.

However, Tehran declared on Saturday that it had once again closed the Strait of Hormuz, accusing the United States of breaching prior agreements.

Reports from a vessel tracking service indicated that the two Indian ships, including a super tanker flying the Indian flag and carrying 2 million barrels of Iraqi oil, had to turn back due to the gunfire from the Revolutionary Guard.

Earlier this week, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reaffirmed India's dedication to ensuring 'safe and unimpeded' maritime transit, stressing that any attacks on merchant vessels are 'entirely unacceptable.'

Jaishankar made these comments during the 'AZEC Plus' online meeting organized by Japan to address supply chain disruptions.
