Violence Erupts in Churachandpur

Churachandpur/ Imphal Mar 22: On Sunday, unrest surged in Churachandpur after assailants targeted the home of Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) chairman Henlienthang Thanglet, shortly following a meeting between council representatives and Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh in Guwahati.

A significant crowd of young individuals gathered around 2:40 PM, launching stones at the chairman's residence and attempting to breach the premises. The situation quickly escalated, necessitating the immediate response of security forces present at the scene.

In an effort to disperse the crowd, security personnel deployed tear gas as the mob attempted to enter the compound. Although the attackers initially scattered, they quickly regrouped and made a second attempt to storm the residence, keeping security forces on high alert.

As tensions rose, additional reinforcements were deployed, with security agencies establishing a strong perimeter to prevent any breaches. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the forces, the residence remained secure.

Meanwhile, splinter groups formed in various parts of the town, causing panic among residents by damaging electric poles, indicating a broader attempt to disrupt the situation.

Sources suggest that the attack may stem from dissatisfaction among local youth regarding the recent discussions between the state government and KZC leaders in Guwahati aimed at establishing a roadmap for peace and stability in Manipur.

This incident highlights the precarious situation in the hill districts, where even attempts at dialogue are met with resistance, presenting new challenges to ongoing peace initiatives.
