Tension Rises in Sarupathar After Grenade Found at BJP Candidate's Home
Grenade Discovery Sparks Alarm in Golaghat District
Jorhat, Apr 6: As the Assam Assembly elections approach, Sarupathar in Golaghat district has been shaken by the discovery of a grenade at the home of BJP candidate Biswajit Phukan on Sunday evening.
Initial reports suggest that unknown assailants may have targeted the candidate's residence, potentially attempting to launch an attack by throwing the explosive from a distance.
Law enforcement quickly arrived at the scene to secure the area. An Additional Superintendent of Police from the Crime Branch noted that the grenade's safety lever was missing, raising concerns that it might have been tampered with.
On Monday, the officer stated, “The grenade's lever has yet to be located. A bomb disposal unit is en route for further analysis.”
Authorities are also reviewing CCTV footage from the area to piece together the timeline of events. “We are currently analyzing the footage, and more details will emerge from it,” the officer added.
Preliminary video evidence indicates that the grenade was thrown around 8:50 PM, likely from outside the property.
Debajit Phukan, the candidate's brother, expressed the family's desire for a comprehensive investigation. “The grenade was thrown at our home at approximately 8:50 PM. It seems it was launched from a distance, which is why it did not enter through the front gate. We urge the police to thoroughly investigate and take strict action against those responsible,” he stated.
He also mentioned a similar incident that occurred about a year ago when two grenades were found on the property during construction.
A local resident who first discovered the grenade reported that he noticed a suspicious black object on the ground. “Upon picking it up, I realized it was a grenade and immediately alerted Biswajit Phukan,” he recounted.
While community members suspect a connection to the ongoing election campaign, police have yet to determine a motive.
This incident has raised security alarms in the region as campaigning intensifies, leading to calls for heightened vigilance as polling day approaches.
