Seizure of Medical Termination of Pregnancy Kits
The Drug Control Administration (DCA) of Telangana has confiscated 113 Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) kits valued at ₹47,672 from a wholesale medical store in Nalgonda. These kits were found to be stocked for sale without valid purchase invoices.
Acting on credible information, DCA officials conducted a raid on July 29 at 'Shri Lakshmi Medical Agencies' located in Prakasham Bazaar, Nalgonda. The establishment is managed by its owner, P. Sudhakar.
During the operation, authorities discovered 113 'Safe-T Kit' MTP kits, which were labeled with batch number BH007ABB and an expiration date of February 2028. These kits were manufactured by Akums Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited, based in Haridwar, Uttarakhand.
According to officials, the kits were being stocked for sale without the necessary purchase invoices, violating the Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940 and its associated regulations. The total value of the seized medications amounts to ₹47,672.
MTP kits, which contain a combination of mifepristone and misoprostol, are intended for terminating early pregnancies under strict medical supervision. Authorities have warned that using these kits without proper oversight can lead to severe bleeding, incomplete abortions, infections, and pose serious risks to a woman's life. The raid was led by Nalgonda's Assistant Director V. Ravi Kumar and Drug Inspector C.H. Sampath Kumar, who also collected samples of the seized medications for further investigation.
Officials stated that an ongoing investigation is in progress, and action will be taken against all individuals found to be involved in the violations. They emphasized that the illegal purchase and sale of MTP kits is a punishable offense under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, which can result in imprisonment for up to two years.
