Tejashwi Yadav Demands Judicial Inquiry into Alleged Use of AK-47 During Student Protests in Siwan

Call for Investigation into Student Protest Incident

On July 27, Tejashwi Yadav, the national executive president of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), urged for a judicial investigation regarding the alleged use of an AK-47 rifle during student protests in Siwan on July 25. As the leader of the opposition in the Bihar Assembly, Yadav also called for the release of all student protesters arrested during the Bihar Bandh related to the alleged NEET question paper leak. He warned the government to release all students by Monday night, or else his party would initiate a statewide movement.

Speaking to reporters, Yadav stated, 'Merely suspending the officer who allegedly used an AK-47 during the Siwan protests is not enough. A judicial inquiry must be conducted to identify who ordered the use of the AK-47 and appropriate action should be taken against them.'

He emphasized that this marks the first instance in the country where an AK-47 has reportedly been used against protesters. Yadav demanded that Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary clarify who authorized the use of the weapon against the protesting students and on what grounds the police filed attempted murder charges against several students.

Yadav reiterated, 'I demand that the government release all arrested students by Monday night. If this does not happen, the RJD will launch a significant statewide movement.'

The central government has already agreed to withdraw all cases against student protesters, and thus, similar actions should be taken regarding the cases filed against them.

Earlier on Monday, an officer was suspended after a video surfaced on social media showing him using an AK-47 during the student protests on July 25. However, the authenticity of this video has not been independently verified.

Purana Kumar Jha, the Superintendent of Police in Siwan, confirmed to a news agency that the officer from the District Intelligence Unit (DIU) has been suspended with immediate effect, and departmental action has been initiated against him. He added, 'No one was injured during the firing.'

During the protests, police were given clear instructions not to fire their weapons.

Meanwhile, Neha Bora, the national president of AISA, also demanded the immediate release of all arrested student protesters, activists associated with leftist student organizations, and Paliganj MLA Sandeep Saurabh, along with the withdrawal of all cases against them. Bora, who arrived in Patna on Monday, stated, 'Around 500 student protesters and activists linked to leftist student organizations, including MLA Sandeep Saurabh, should be released immediately. I will remain here until their release.'

She warned that if the government fails to act, they would initiate a student movement similar to that in Delhi. Bora is set to meet with the protesters currently detained in Beur Jail. She insisted that all cases against students should be withdrawn immediately, as assured by Union Minister J.P. Nadda. On July 25, members of leftist student organizations protested across several districts in support of the Bihar Bandh called against the alleged NEET question paper leak and police action against student protesters.

During these protests, clashes with police occurred in various locations. The bandh turned violent in Patna, Saran, Siwan, Aurangabad, Bhagalpur, Sitamarhi, Purnia, and Bhojpur, while lighter protests were reported in Samastipur, Nawada, Nalanda, Madhubani, and Sheikhpura. Protesters threw stones at police at the Dakbangla intersection, leading to the detention of several students.
