Jorhat, July 13: Equipped with just a bicycle, a tent, and the loyal company of his dog, 17-year-old Ricky Phukan from Assam has triumphantly returned home after an extraordinary cycling journey spanning 5,000 kilometers to Kedarnath and back.
The young adventurer, hailing from Mariani in Jorhat district, dedicated nearly four months to this expedition, covering approximately 2,500 kilometers each way to one of India's most esteemed pilgrimage sites.
However, for Ricky, this journey was not solely about reaching the sacred Himalayan destination; it represented a test of his determination, resilience, and purpose.
Ricky commenced his adventure from Mariani on April 10, carrying only essential camping equipment and accompanied by his dog, "Pa".
Facing long distances, unpredictable weather, and scarce resources, he successfully reached Kedarnath in 45 days before embarking on the equally challenging return trip.
“I reached Kedarnath in 45 days and have now returned to Assam after nearly four months. It feels good to be back after such a long time,” Ricky expressed to the media upon his return.
With limited funds, the teenager depended significantly on the generosity of strangers he encountered along his route.
Temples and petrol stations served as his makeshift campsites, where he pitched his tent each night, while kind-hearted individuals across various states provided him with food, shelter, and encouragement.
“During the journey, people helped me a lot. Petrol pumps and temples became my places of shelter. I would pitch my tent there and spend the night. Throughout the journey, my companion was my dog, ‘Pa’,” he recounted.
Ricky expressed particular gratitude for the warmth and hospitality he experienced in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
“I met people who helped and supported me and were welcoming, especially in states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Throughout the journey, I stayed in temples, petrol pumps as well as in tents,” he added.
While his expedition highlighted his determination and endurance, Ricky emphasized that it also conveyed a broader message.
By traveling with his pet, he aimed to raise awareness about animal welfare and advocate for the creation of more dog shelters in Assam, including his hometown of Mariani.
“My purpose for undertaking the journey with my pet dog is to encourage the establishment of more dog shelters in Assam, including Mariani,” he stated.
Ricky's return has been celebrated by the residents of Mariani and well-wishers, many of whom regard his journey as a remarkable testament to perseverance, bravery, and the pursuit of dreams despite limited resources.
