Serious Allegations Lead to Temporary Closure

The Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) BPO center located in Nashik, Maharashtra, has temporarily halted operations following alarming allegations of sexual harassment, mental abuse, and forced religious conversion. In response to these serious claims, the company announced on Thursday that all employees are to work from home until further notice.

Investigation Launched into Allegations

The TCS facility came under scrutiny after a significant scandal emerged, revealing accusations of sexual misconduct, psychological torment, and religious coercion. Consequently, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to look into the matter. At least eight female employees have come forward, alleging a long-standing pattern of sexual harassment and forced conversions. The allegations also include claims that staff were pressured to consume specific foods and participate in religious rituals against their will.

Police Findings and Arrests

According to Nashik's Police Commissioner, Sandeep Karnik, the investigation indicates that seven male suspects operated as an organized group at the workplace, allegedly targeting female employees. He stated, "All seven male employees are co-accused in most cases, indicating they acted as a collective unit." So far, nine FIRs have been filed, including one by a male employee who reported religious harassment and attempts at conversion. Eight suspects have been arrested, comprising seven men and one woman, while another female suspect remains at large.

Identities of Arrested Suspects Revealed

The arrested male suspects have been identified as Danish Sheikh, Tausif Attar, Raza Memon, Shahrukh Qureshi, Shafi Sheikh, Asif Aftab Ansari, and Shahrukh Sheikh.

Allegations of Abuse of Power

Some of the accused held senior positions, such as team leaders, and allegedly misused their authority to harass colleagues. An official noted that one of the female suspects, who was the HR head, reportedly discouraged a victim from filing a complaint, telling her that "such things happen" and siding with the accused. Another female suspect has been implicated in a case of religious harassment.

Collaboration with Various Agencies

The police have reached out to several agencies, including the State Intelligence Department (SID), Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), and the National Investigation Agency (NIA), to investigate any potential larger connections or funding aspects. Karnik stated, "As soon as we gather evidence, we will reach a conclusion." He mentioned that the initial complainant was hesitant at first, but after receiving counseling and support from the police, more victims came forward, leading to multiple FIRs being filed. To facilitate communication and encourage reporting, a female Deputy Commissioner of Police and female personnel have been deployed at the office.

National Commission for Women Takes Action

Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken cognizance of the case and has formed a fact-finding committee to investigate the TCS BPO unit on April 18.
