Tashkent to Host 2027 World Para Athletics Championships: A Milestone for Central Asia

Tashkent has been confirmed as the host city for the 2027 World Para Athletics Championships, a landmark event for Uzbekistan and Central Asia. Scheduled for June 2027 at the Olympic City Main Stadium, this championship will feature around 1,300 athletes from over 100 countries, making it the largest international Para sport event in Uzbekistan's history. Paul Fitzgerald, Head of World Para Athletics, highlighted the significance of this event in promoting Para athletics and enhancing societal perceptions of individuals with disabilities. Uzbekistan's recent achievements in the sport further underscore its growing prominence in the region. This championship promises to leave a lasting legacy in both the country and Central Asia.
 

Tashkent Selected as Host City

Tashkent has officially been designated as the venue for the 2027 World Para Athletics Championships, marking a historic moment as it will be the first time this esteemed event takes place in Uzbekistan and the broader Central Asian region.


The announcement was made by World Para Athletics, confirming that this significant para-sport event will occur at the Olympic City Main Stadium in June 2027. This edition will be the 13th iteration of the World Para Athletics Championships and the fifth time the event is hosted in Asia, following previous locations such as Doha in 2015, Dubai in 2019, Kobe in 2024, and New Delhi in 2025. Approximately 1,300 athletes from over 100 countries are expected to participate, making it the largest international Para sport event ever held in Uzbekistan. While the exact number of events is still pending confirmation, at least 164 events will be included, aligning with the Paralympic Games program, with the potential for more.


Significance for the Region

Paul Fitzgerald, the Head of World Para Athletics, expressed enthusiasm about the announcement, emphasizing its importance for both Uzbekistan and the surrounding region. He stated, "We are thrilled to confirm that the 2027 World Para Athletics Championships will be hosted in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. This event will be the largest international Para sport gathering in the country, creating significant opportunities to expand our sport, engage more fans, and positively influence societal views on individuals with disabilities in Central Asia."


Recognition of Uzbekistan's Development

Fitzgerald also acknowledged Uzbekistan's advancements in Para athletics, noting, "In recent years, Uzbekistan has emerged as a notable player in Asian Para athletics. Their athletes have demonstrated impressive performances at World Championships and Paralympics, showcasing the dedication of the National Paralympic Committee of Uzbekistan in enhancing facilities and investing in sports. We believe the upcoming World Championships will leave a lasting legacy not just in Uzbekistan but throughout the region."


Dr. Mukhtorkhon Tashkhodjaev, Chairman of NPC Uzbekistan, added, "We are excited to welcome talented athletes and future champions. This is a unique opportunity to showcase our nation's hospitality and dedication to sports."


Recent Achievements

The latest World Para Athletics Championships took place in New Delhi, India, where over 1,000 athletes from more than 100 nations competed in 186 medal events. Brazil led the medal tally, while Uzbekistan secured a commendable position in the top 15, winning five gold medals.
