Tamil Nadu's TVK Government Faces Crucial Assembly Challenge: Speaker Election Looms
Major Test for TVK Government in Tamil Nadu Assembly
Chennai: The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), under the leadership of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, is gearing up for its inaugural significant challenge in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, focusing on the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
For the Speaker position, TVK has nominated seasoned politician J.C.D. Prabhakar, a three-time legislator and former member of AIADMK, who joined TVK prior to the Assembly elections. He has played a pivotal role in shaping the party's organizational framework and election manifesto.
Prabhakar, aged 73, represents the Thousand Lights constituency in Chennai. Analysts suggest that he may be elected without opposition, considering the ruling alliance's current majority in the Assembly.
Additionally, TVK has put forward Ravi Shankar as its candidate for the Deputy Speaker role.
The ruling coalition, which includes TVK, Congress, Left parties, and other allies, boasts approximately 120 MLAs in the 234-member Assembly, providing the government with a solid advantage.
The election of the Speaker carries heightened political importance, especially with the opposition AIADMK facing internal strife, potentially leading to a split after a disappointing performance in the recent Assembly elections.
The AIADMK secured only 47 seats and is currently embroiled in a leadership conflict between former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and senior leader S.P. Velumani.
Reports indicate that around 30 AIADMK MLAs are backing Velumani, advocating for his recognition as the leader of the legislative party.
Conversely, 17 MLAs continue to support Palaniswami as the party's legislative head, exacerbating the internal turmoil within the opposition.
Both factions have reportedly submitted distinct letters to the Assembly Speaker's office, asserting their claims to leadership.
In this context, the Speaker's decision regarding the official opposition leadership is anticipated to have significant political ramifications for the AIADMK's future.
These developments unfold as the newly established TVK government seeks to solidify its authority after emerging as the largest party in the Assembly, forming a government with support from several opposition factions previously aligned with the DMK-led coalition.
