Tamil Nadu's Sports Minister Advocates for Sports Policy to Combat Youth Drug Abuse
Tamil Nadu Minister Advocates Sports Policy to Combat Drug Issues
On Tuesday, Aadhav Arjuna, the Tamil Nadu Sports Minister and leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive sports policy in the state. He pointed out that India's lack of success in the Olympics is indicative of a missing strategic vision for sports. Arjuna highlighted the rising concerns of drug and alcohol abuse among the youth, suggesting that these issues could be mitigated through sports and social reforms initiated at the school level.
He outlined plans to create a structured sports development framework aimed at children aged 8 to 18. This initiative includes grassroots training and the establishment of ten Olympic academies throughout Tamil Nadu, with the ultimate goal of nurturing future Olympic medalists.
"In the past century, we have not secured an Olympic medal. The absence of a clear sports vision has contributed to our youth's struggles with substance abuse. Hence, it is crucial for the Chief Minister and the new government to prioritize sports development, especially in tackling drug issues. While law enforcement will manage the cleanup, social reform must start in schools. Sports can be a powerful solution. We are committed to developing a new sports policy targeting the 8 to 18 age group, aiming for Olympic success and grassroots development," Arjuna stated to reporters.
