Transformative Changes in Tamil Nadu's Public Transport

The public transport sector in Tamil Nadu is set to undergo a significant transformation. During an event held in Salem, the state's Transport Minister, Vijay Tamilan Parthiban, announced that the Tamil Nadu government will exclusively purchase air-conditioned (AC) buses for the state transport corporation.

The minister emphasized that this groundbreaking decision aligns with Chief Minister Vijay's vision to provide premium and comfortable travel options for the state's citizens.

Inspiration from Chief Minister Vijay's Bus Journey

While addressing the media, Transport Minister Parthiban shared an intriguing reason behind this decision. According to reports, Chief Minister Vijay recently traveled on a government bus.

During this journey, the Chief Minister recognized that every citizen deserves a comfortable travel experience. He expressed his desire for all new buses to be equipped with air conditioning, ensuring that all segments of society, including himself, can travel without discomfort.

Connecting Remote Areas

The Chief Minister has also directed that every remote and rural area in Tamil Nadu be fully integrated into the bus network, ensuring that no one is left without connectivity.

Recent Addition of 300 New Buses

Just a week prior to this major announcement, the actor-turned-politician Chief Minister Vijay inaugurated 300 new buses to strengthen the state's transport fleet. During this event, he was seen engaging warmly with a bus conductor.

Key Features of the New Fleet

Total Cost: These buses were procured at a cost of ₹127.21 crores.

Fuel Types: The fleet includes 164 diesel buses and 136 environmentally friendly BS-VI compliant CNG buses.

Routes: To enhance passenger convenience and reduce waiting times, these vehicles have been promptly deployed from major transit hubs like Chennai's Koyambedu and Kilambakkam.

Aiming to Modernize Public Transport

This initiative by the ruling Tamil Ga Vetrik Kadagam (TVK) government is part of a broader policy aimed at modernizing the state's infrastructure and public transport network. The government believes that making buses fully air-conditioned will not only provide relief to passengers during the summer but also attract the middle class to opt for public transport over private vehicles, thereby reducing traffic congestion and pollution on the roads.
