Chennai, August 1: Tamil Nadu is gearing up to kick off the Houselisting and Housing Census this Saturday, marking the start of the initial phase of Census 2027. This month-long initiative will involve a door-to-door enumeration process throughout the state.

Over 115,000 enumerators are set to participate in what officials are calling India’s first entirely digital Census operation.

The fieldwork, which will run from August 1 to August 30, aims to reach every household in Tamil Nadu through approximately 120,000 house-listing blocks managed by 1,026 administrative units.

To ensure the enumeration process runs smoothly, around 19,000 supervisors have been appointed to oversee the activities across the state.

Enumerators will visit each household to gather data using a 33-question schedule that addresses various aspects such as housing conditions, ownership, construction materials, access to drinking water, sanitation, electricity, cooking fuel, communication facilities, and other essential amenities.

The information collected during this phase will lay the groundwork for the Population Census and assist in future planning and policy development.

For the first time in the history of the Census in India, all data will be recorded using a specialized mobile application, moving away from the traditional paper-based approach.

Officials have indicated that this technology-driven initiative is expected to enhance data collection accuracy, decrease processing times, minimize errors, and facilitate efficient information management.

The Houselisting and Housing Census will serve as a statistical basis for evidence-based policymaking, targeted welfare initiatives, and long-term development strategies.

The data gathered will enable governments to evaluate housing conditions, identify infrastructure deficiencies, and design development programs based on reliable statistical insights.

Prior to the launch, Tamil Nadu saw a positive response to the newly introduced self-enumeration option.

From July 17 to July 31, over 1 million households provided their information online via the Census self-enumeration portal.

Officials have advised residents who completed the online process to keep their Self-Enumeration Identification Number handy for verification during the enumerator's visit.

Households that did not utilize the online option will also be included in the door-to-door survey.

Officials emphasized that all information collected during the Census is safeguarded under the Census Act of 1948 and will remain strictly confidential.

They also noted that the digital collection and processing of data adhere to the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, ensuring that citizens' information is used exclusively for statistical analysis, public policy formulation, and development planning.
