Congress Backs TVK Leader Vijay for Chief Minister Role

Leaders from the Tamil Nadu Congress have presented a letter of support to Vijay, the head of the Tamilaga Vetrik Kazhagam (TVK), at the party's headquarters in Chennai. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) have decided to fully back TVK in its efforts to form a government. Reports suggest that Vijay is expected to take the oath of office as Chief Minister tomorrow at 10 AM. Amid rapidly evolving political dynamics following the assembly election results, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is likely to attend the swearing-in ceremony in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.

Political Developments Following Congress's Support

This development follows the decision by the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and the CLP to support Vijay's party, TVK, in forming a government. Senior Congress officials had previously met with Vijay at the TVK headquarters in Chennai to convey their backing. However, Girish Chodankar, the Congress in-charge for Tamil Nadu, stated that the party remains in contact with the DMK, which is part of the 'INDIA' coalition led by MK Stalin. The DMK and Congress have been allies since 2004, having collaborated on several occasions in the past.

Vijay's Request for Support and Legislative Decisions

Vijay had formally requested support from the Congress leadership through a letter, prompting party president Mallikarjun Kharge, former president Rahul Gandhi, organization general secretary K.C. Venugopal, and Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar to deliberate on the matter. Subsequently, the Tamil Nadu Pradesh Congress Committee was directed to make a decision considering the sentiments of the state. The decision to support Vijay was ratified during a meeting of the Congress Legislative Party, where S. Rajesh Kumar from the Kanyakumari Killiur assembly constituency was also elected as the leader of the legislative party. In the 234-member Tamil Nadu assembly, TVK has secured 108 seats, with Vijay winning two of them. To form the government, TVK requires the support of 11 additional legislators.

Congress's Legislative Presence and Future Prospects

The Congress party has elected five legislators. Until now, it has been part of the DMK-led coalition. Following the Congress Legislative Party meeting, Girish Chodankar stated, 'TVK president Vijay has formally requested Congress's support to form a government in Tamil Nadu. The people of Tamil Nadu, especially the youth, have expressed their vote for a secular, progressive, and welfare-oriented government that upholds constitutional principles with a clear and strong majority.'
