Withdrawal of Divorce Petition

On Friday, Sangeeta, the wife of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, retracted her divorce petition at the Chengalpattu district court. Following her withdrawal, the court officially closed the divorce case. This development occurred during the hearing held on the same day. Sangeeta participated via video conferencing from London, while Vijay was unable to attend in person due to his participation in the ongoing Tamil Nadu Assembly session.

Court Proceedings and Previous Delays

During the hearing, Vijay's attorney informed the court that the Chief Minister could not be present due to the assembly session. Sangeeta joined the proceedings virtually from London. After listening to both parties, the court decided to close the case upon the withdrawal of the divorce petition. The case had previously faced multiple delays as both parties were not present in court. As public figures, Vijay and Sangeeta had requested permission to participate virtually due to security concerns and procedural difficulties.

Background of the Case

The case first emerged in June when a family court judge questioned Sangeeta's lawyer about delays in filing documents. The court suggested that the couple should be sent to a mediation center before proceeding further. The next hearing was scheduled for August 7. However, the situation took a new turn on Friday when Sangeeta decided to withdraw her divorce petition.

In February, Sangeeta had filed for divorce citing differences with Vijay. She also requested alimony and the right to reside in their home located in Neelankarai. According to the petition, Sangeeta alleged that Vijay had an extramarital affair with an actress, which she discovered in 2021.
