Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin Intensifies Protest Against Delimitation Bill

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has ramped up his opposition to the proposed delimitation bill by burning a copy and raising a black flag, signaling the start of a statewide protest. As Parliament prepares for a special session to discuss significant electoral reforms, Stalin urges widespread resistance, drawing on historical movements against perceived injustices. He warns that the bill could turn Tamils into refugees in their own land, calling for unity against the BJP's perceived arrogance. This protest emerges amidst rising tensions over the bill linked to the 2011 census and the recent approval of amendments to implement the Nari Shakti Vandan Act.

Protests Erupt Over Delimitation Bill in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin, escalated his opposition to the central government's proposed delimitation by burning a copy of the bill and raising a black flag, marking the official launch of a statewide movement. The government is set to convene a three-day special session of Parliament starting Thursday, which is expected to be tumultuous due to the introduction of three significant bills aimed at reshaping India's electoral framework and representation.

Wearing black attire, Stalin protested against the Constitution (One Hundred Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026, which proposes changes to the size and structure of state assemblies and the Lok Sabha. He labeled the bill as a 'black law' and called for widespread resistance across Tamil Nadu in a post on X. He declared, “Let this resistance spread throughout Tamil Nadu! The arrogance of the fascist BJP must be crushed!”

Drawing parallels with past anti-Hindi movements, he noted that previous resistance from Tamil Nadu had compelled Delhi to yield, asserting that a similar movement would challenge the current proposal. He claimed that this bill would render Tamils refugees in their own land and emphasized that the movement would extend across Dravidian territory to dismantle BJP's arrogance.

This protest comes amid growing opposition to the proposed delimitation, which is linked to the amendment of population-based constituencies based on the 2011 census. The issue has gained traction following the central government's approval of draft amendment bills to implement the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, 2023. Opposition parties have also expressed concerns regarding the urgency of calling a special session of Parliament during the election season.
