Tamil Nadu CM Launches 'Dream Olympics' to Honor State Athletes
Celebrating Athletic Achievements
The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C Joseph Vijay, introduced the 'Dream Olympics' initiative during a special ceremony that honored state athletes who excelled at the 20th Asian Games 2026 and the 46th Chess Olympiad 2026. This event took place at The Leela Palace in Chennai, organized by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT). Athletes were recognized for their outstanding performances and received cash incentives in the form of cheques.
The gathering highlighted the achievements of Tamil Nadu athletes at significant sporting events, with the government providing financial support to encourage their continued success. The 'Dream Olympics' initiative aims to foster and promote sporting talent within the state.
Athletes Express Gratitude to CM and Government
G Kamalini, a wicketkeeper-batter from Madurai who secured a gold medal with the Indian women's cricket team at the 2026 Asian Games, expressed her appreciation for CM Vijay's supportive remarks during the event. She stated, "CM Vijay said, 'We are there for you.' That simple statement meant a lot to me. It’s a proud moment for both my family and me."
Chess Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, who contributed to the Indian team's silver medal at the Chess Olympiad, also acknowledged the Tamil Nadu government's backing. He remarked, "Winning the silver medal was fantastic, and meeting the CM to receive cash support was a great honor. The Tamil Nadu government, through SDAT, has been incredibly supportive, and I am grateful for the elite scheme assistance I receive."
Celebrating Personal Achievements
Athlete Vithya Ramraj shared her joy after winning three medals, stating, "I’m thrilled to have met CM Vijay. It’s a dream for everyone to meet him. I also broke a 42-year-old national record, which makes me very happy. I owe my success to my coach and appreciate the government's fantastic support."
Historic Bronze in Rowing
Rower Satnam Singh expressed pride in India's historic bronze medal win in the men's Double Sculls at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. This achievement marks India's first medal in this event since the Asian Games began in 1951. Partnering with Salman Khan, Satnam completed the race in 6:13.25, adding to his previous bronze medal in the Quadruple Sculls event.
Satnam noted, "This victory opens new opportunities for rowing in India. The experience gained from competitions helps reduce pressure and build confidence, which is crucial for athletes."
