Tribute to a Visionary Leader

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, M.K. Stalin, paid homage to social reformer E.V. Ramasamy, known as Periyar, on the occasion of his 52nd death anniversary. He described Periyar as a remarkable figure who instilled a sense of self-respect, rational thinking, and equality among the people. In a post, Stalin emphasized that Periyar empowered the downtrodden to stand tall with dignity, dedicating his entire life to the land of Tamil Nadu. He asserted that the Tamil people would never bow their heads nor submit to anyone's dominance, as Periyar's ideals of rationalism, humanism, and social equality continue to guide society today.

Stalin expressed on social media that by straightening their bent backs and standing proudly to protect their dignity, they honor Periyar. He stated, 'The Tamil people will neither bow their heads nor yield to dominance, as we uphold rational thought, love for fellow humans, and equality, which is the pride of our community; this is our gratitude for his tireless efforts! The enemy forces, unable to overshadow the great sun named Periyar, stumble in vain; if #TamilNadu unites to thwart their deceitful plans, victory will always be ours! #Periyar.'

DMK MP K. Kanimozhi remarked, 'Today marks the death anniversary of Father Periyar, who laid the foundation for the liberation that society has long yearned for. For generations to come, we will honor his memory, which has shaped Tamil society and guided us with his principles. Let us continue his unwavering struggle.'

E.V. Ramasamy (Periyar) initiated the Self-Respect Movement in 1925 to challenge Brahminical supremacy and uplift non-Brahmin communities in Tamil Nadu. Through his journal 'Kudi Arasu', he advocated for rationalism, gender equality, and anti-caste reforms, fostering a new sense of Dravidian identity and paving the way for the rise of the Dravidian movement.

The year 1925 is significant in the history of the Self-Respect Movement for two reasons: the publication of the Tamil weekly Kudi Arasu (Republic) in May and Periyar's separation from the Indian National Congress (INC) in November. While his departure from Congress is often viewed as the formal beginning of the movement, Kudi Arasu had already introduced a new dynamic in the Madras Presidency months earlier. This publication showcased a strong enthusiasm for social reform that extended far beyond advocating for the political benefits of communal representation.
