Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay Resigns from Tiruchirappalli East Seat to Retain Perambur
Vijay's Strategic Move in Tamil Nadu Politics
On Sunday, Chief Minister Vijay of Tamil Nadu stepped down from his position in the Tiruchirappalli East constituency while opting to maintain his hold on the Perambur seat. This decision came just hours after he took the oath as the ninth Chief Minister of the coastal state during a grand ceremony held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. Vijay, who leads the Tamilga Vetttri Kazhagam (TVK), contested and won both the Tiruchirappalli East and Perambur seats in the upcoming 2026 assembly elections.
According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Vijay secured 91,381 votes in Tiruchirappalli East, defeating the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate S. Inigo Irudayaraj, who garnered 63,965 votes. In Perambur, he also triumphed over DMK's R.D. Shekhar, receiving 120,365 votes compared to Shekhar's 66,650 votes. Following his swearing-in, TVK leader C. Joseph Vijay indicated a significant shift from traditional governance, emphasizing a comprehensive audit of all departments and a policy of 'zero interference' in administration.
Vijay's victory is being hailed as a historic shift, overturning nearly six decades of Dravidian political dominance.
New Cabinet and Future Plans
Minister Aathav Arjun, in a post-swearing-in interview with a media channel, described the election results as a victory for the people, particularly crediting the youth and women of Tamil Nadu. He emphasized that the new administration would be founded on principles of transparency, secularism, and social justice. Arjun stated, 'Our leader and all ministers will run a transparent government. We will work for all minority communities and prioritize development.'
When asked about the transition of power from the previous government led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Arjun accused the outgoing administration of being largely corrupt, which the TVK aims to change with a development-focused ministry. Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar outlined the government's immediate action plan, confirming that the Chief Minister has instructed a thorough audit of each department.
