Meeting on Mekedatu Dam Project

Chief Minister Vijay Reviews Mekedatu Dam Project

On the same day, Chief Minister Vijay chaired a high-level meeting to assess the state's response to the proposed Mekedatu dam project on the Cauvery River. Tamil Nadu has consistently opposed this project, arguing that it could adversely affect the state's share of river water and harm farmers. An official statement indicated that the meeting was convened following a recent 'groundbreaking' ceremony for the project in Karnataka. The primary focus of the discussions was to safeguard Tamil Nadu's water rights and protect the interests of farmers. Officials also reviewed the legal status of the dispute, noting the Supreme Court's previous ruling that dismissed Tamil Nadu's review petition regarding the project. The court had determined that questions related to the technical aspects of the project fall under the jurisdiction of central expert bodies.

Legal Actions and Concerns

Following the review of developments, the Chief Minister instructed officials to expedite further legal actions, keeping the court's observations in mind after thorough consultations. Karnataka has proposed the construction of a balancing reservoir at Mekedatu on the Cauvery River, claiming that the project aims to enhance drinking water supply and generate electricity. However, Tamil Nadu, located downstream, contends that this project could negatively impact the water flow reaching its regions.
