Government Formation Efforts Intensify in Tamil Nadu

Following the historic results of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, efforts to form a government in the state have accelerated. The 'Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam' (TVK), led by actor Vijay, has emerged as the largest party, securing 108 seats in its inaugural election. Reports indicate that Vijay has requested a formal meeting with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at the Raj Bhavan. The party is preparing to stake its claim to form the government as the leading party.

Sources reveal that Vijay plans to depart for the TVK office at 10 AM, where he will meet with the newly elected legislators.

Election Results Overview

After the counting of votes for all 234 assembly seats, TVK achieved a total of 108 seats. The 'Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam' (DMK), led by M.K. Stalin, secured the second position with 59 seats, while the 'All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam' (AIADMK) came in third with 47 seats.

The performance of smaller parties was average; Congress won five seats, and the 'Pattali Makkal Katchi' (PMK) secured four. Despite falling short of a majority, TVK's strong showing is viewed as a significant success in Tamil Nadu's political landscape, positioning Vijay at the center of government formation efforts. Reports suggest that TVK has activated its 'Plan B' and is engaging in discussions with potential coalition partners to reach the majority threshold.

Coalition Talks and Support

According to reports, both Congress and PMK are prepared to support a TVK-led government. As part of the negotiations, both parties are requesting two ministerial positions each within the government. Meanwhile, leftist parties are in discussions among themselves but have yet to reach a final decision.

Other regional parties, such as 'Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi' (VCK) and 'Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam' (DMDK), are also waiting for the final election results before taking any steps. As coalition talks progress, all eyes are on whether Vijay can gather the necessary numbers to surpass the majority mark and establish the next government in Tamil Nadu.
